How It All Started

Our story began with a business trip to the Dominican Republic in early December 2005. My name is David Allen and I work as an electronic security consultant. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled many places and seen many things. Like most of us, I love to meet people and learn about them. I found the people I met in the Dominican Republic to be warm, friendly and willing to share whatever they have. A wonderful place! Well, now back to the beginning. During my trip a group of us went out to dinner. Dinner conversation went in the direction of technology and the Dominican Republic. An associate on the project brought his friend Jacqueline to dinner. Jacqueline, a single mother of two young daughters, Katherine age 11 and Jerrissa age 13, mentioned that the average price for a used computer was 14,000 - 17,000 Dominican Pesos. The average Dominican worker makes about 4,000 Pesos a month. Computers are just not possible for these young children, even though the world they are entering requires computers for any chance of growth or advancement. I then learned that the used computers that we were discussing were old Pentium 1 and 486 class machines!

Dinner conversation also included discussions about the CAMPO – the farming areas where many Dominicans make their living. Today’s agricultural industry needs computer technology as much as any essential farming equipment in order to provide weather reports, diverse methods of farming, insect control, irrigation techniques, and most importantly, the global market and purchasing power!

That night was the launching of the Computers Helping Children Grow program. We in the USA throw away these old machines when we upgrade – These same computers are perfectly suited for our purposes. We believe that there is an abundance of obsolete computers that fit our need. The real challenge is in the education. We need to establish a dedicated program that would easily be expanded to the CAMPO. We need well-trained students and teachers who can learn and then share their knowledge with other generations.

The seed was planted in December 2005. It is now up to all of us to nurture the project and help it grow. Then, someday soon, we can look to the harvest and fruits of our efforts.
